Flying Dragon by Alexander Calder

My Google homepage reminded me that today is the 113th birthday of famed sculptor and artist, Alexander Calder. In celebration of his big day, I thought I’d post this photo I took last month in the North Garden at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Calder finished “Flying Dragon” in 1975. The large, ‘Calder-red’ painted steel plate sculpture fits in beautifully with the garden and looks like a dragonfly about to take flight. What I love about this sculpture is that it looks different when viewed from every angle.
